Laser shock peening(LSP) is a new surface strengthening technology. It use laser-induced,high-energy shock wave to induce compressive residual stresses on the impacted area of metal. So this treatment can strengthen material. It reviews the basic mechanisms of LSP and the generation of residual stresses. Then the calculated model for residual stresses is discussed and analyzed.Last the characteristics of compressive residual stresses induced by LSP on the surface and in depth are studied. The results indicate that the optimal peak pressure normally produces the best results for a LSP process, and the compressive residual stresses on the impacted area of metal are generally uniform on the surface and in depth.
