This chapter focuses on one tool to protect consumers' information — privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs). It discusses how PETs might be employed pre-emptively to protect data. It explains that some forms of PET can help prevent unnecessary data collection and can design good information-handling practices into information systems. It details that PETs may also empower consumers, by building in access to their data and allowing them to make choices about how their information is used.
