<b>Fatal pneumocephalus caused by hypermucoviscous hydrogen-producing <i>Klebsiella pneumoniae</i> capsular genotype K63 in a patient with diabetic ketoacidosis</b>

Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae is associated with respiratory infection, liver abscess, and meningitis, but rarely with pneumocephalus. In recent decades, only eight cases of pneumocephalus caused by K. pneumoniae in nonoperative and nontraumatic patients have been reported. Case Description: Here, we describe a fatal case of pneumocephalus caused by a hypermucoviscous, hydrogen-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strain in an immunocompromised diabetic patient. Conclusion: A fatal case of pneumocephalus caused by K. pneumoniae cerebral infection in a diabetic patient has been reported. Although sensitive to antibiotics, considerable attention should be paid to K. pneumoniae strains that produce large amounts of mucous and gas in diabetic patients.
