Industrial manufacturing processes utilizing microorganisms should be optimized with the appropriate design of bioreactors, accurate monitoring of cultivation state, optimal control of the process, and good linkage to the downstream processing. This chapter deals with selected topics of process engineering related to microbiological cultivation in bioreactors and reviews the development of several technologies, including high-throughput processing for the scale-up of microbial processes, single-use disposable bioreactors, sensors and monitoring technology in bioreactor systems, and process analytical technology in microbial cultivation. It also describes the characterization and validation of these technologies, their practical implementations, and future perspectives for the advances of bioprocess engineering.
