This course provides students with an introduction to the sociology of culture. We begin by examining theoretical approaches to culture including the Frankfurt School, Birmingham School, feminism, and postmodernism as well as debates over high versus popular culture. We investigate cultural change through fads and trends. Then, we look at the role of social capital and multiculturalism in society. Next, we focus on collective memory and national identities. We turn our attention to mass media including television, advertising, and publishing. We discuss the current debates surrounding culture wars concentrating on the arts and museums. Finally, we view spectacles and landscapes emphasizing the importance of culture in the built environment.
