Ba3Tb(BO3) 3:Eu3+ red phosphor was synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The excitation spectrum extends both from 250 nm to 330 nm and 350 nm to 400 nm;of which the main peak of the excitation spectrum is located at 383 nm. The results show that the Ba3Tb(BO3) 3:Eu3+ red phosphor can be effectively excited by ultraviolet–near-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes based on a ultraviolet InGaN chip. The emission spectrum of Ba3Tb(BO3) 3:Eu3+ shows four groups peaks. The dominant peak is at 620 nm due to the 5D0→7F2 transition of Eu3+,under excitation of 365 nm. The most intense red emission is obtained when the mole fraction of Eu3+ is about 2%. The experimental results indicate that there is effective energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ in the Ba3Tb(BO3) 3 host.
