The role of the manual therapy in rehabilitating the lumbar syndrome

Lumbosacral back and lower limbs are generally seen as two isolated regions, however, there are many authors who believe that these two regions are functionally related. The lumbar spine is the link between the lower extremities and the body, plays significant role in the transfer of forces through the body via the kinematic chain. On the other hand, the lumbar spine serves to place the caudae equinae as an ending part of the spinal cord from which nerves emerge that innervate lumbar region and lower limbs. As a result, the most common pains and problems related to the spinal column are in the lumbar region. Improper posture, increased static load, and muscle hipertonus and functional blockages cause restriction of movement in the lumbar region that are associated with pain that can irritate hips and along the lower limbs. The subject of this study are 39 individuals (24 men and 15 women) who have been with symptoms of pain and functional blockade in lumbosacral area. The obtained results of the manual therapy indicate that our suggested method of treatment helps to unblock the vertebrae in the lumbosacral area, mastering the balance between static and dynamic muscles as well as the symmetric of the burden of lower limbs, for normalizing walking and standing for healing spontaneous pain and pain that is provoked in trigger points of the lumbosacral muscles.
