Bus Stop Location and Design

Those elements associated with the location and design of bus stops that affect the efficiency of transit and traffic operations are identified. This evaluation was accomplished using two questionnaires that provided opinions of city traffic engineers and transit operators regarding current practice, criteria appropriate for evaluating the utility of bus stops, and strategies for improving the utility of bus stops. It was found that the criteria used to determine the location and design of bus stops should be in the form of guidelines, not numerical warrants. In locating stops each should be treated individually. A case study is presented to show how the individual location and design measures interact.
