The Man Who Carried Computer Science on His Shoulders

During the 1970s and 1980s, Edsger Dijkstra was possibly the most discussed scientist in his field, admired and criticized in equal measure. He largely ignored the work of others and rested on his own ideas, which he typed or handwrote, photocopied, and then mailed to other computer scientists. He was a pioneer and a genius whose work shaped the emerging field of computer science like few others.
