To resolve the toxicity of traditional chemical cross-linked agents, this study focused on the structure, oxidation degree, content of aldehyde and viscosity-average molecular weight of sodium alginate(ALG)oxidized by periodate, and alginate dialdehyde with the aldehyde structure. The oxidation degree and kinetics data were determined by iodine colorimetry. The content of ADA aldehyde was measured by the reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The viscosity method was used to determine the molecular weight of ADA.The test results showed that the oxidation degree and the content of aldehyde increased with an increasing dosage of periodate. The oxidation degree increased with the reaction time, and began to level off upon reaching about 70% after 12 h.The molecular weight changed from 280 000 to 10 000 because of the existence of free radicals, and did not change with the changing consumption of periodate. The test results could help to track the cross-linked reaction for preparation of composite materials.
